Three Tennessee men face at least three charges each of reckless endangerment in connection with a rash of objects thrown from I-75 overpasses. They were arrested late Wednesday, Dec. 29, and apparently confessed to throwing the objects off the overpasses.
Casey Thomas, 18 of Athens faces three counts of reckless endangerment, two counts of felony vandalism over $500, and one count of criminal conspiracy to commit reckless homicide.
Barry Burbank, 20 of Sweetwater faces three counts of reckless endangerment, and two counts of felony vandalism over $500.
Jeremy Mulkey, 19 of Athens faces 3 counts of reckless endangerment, two counts of felony vandalism over $500, 18 counts of attempted reckless homicide, and one count of criminal conspiracy to commit reckless homicide.
The first incident took place in the early morning hours of November 16, when a mailbox was thrown from the County Road 326 overpass in Sweetwater, which is about halfway between Knoxville and Chattanooga, striking the windshield of a tractor-trailer and injuring the driver.
Earlier, a tour bus was struck by a small motor thrown from County Road 130 overpass along Interstate 75. That driver had to be hospitalized.
And on December 22, another mailbox thrown from the County Road 255 bridge, hitting a semi traveling south on I-75. The driver of the truck, Wayne Belden, saw a man standing on the bridge, holding something over his head. The man threw the object, hitting the truck’s sunroof. Belden was not injured.
A fourth unreported incident came to light during the suspect interviews that occurred on the County Road 264 overpass, but no vehicles were struck.
