Interstate Transport and Interstate Dedicated Create Capacity Task Force

Interstate Transport and Interstate Dedicated have created the Capacity Task Force team, whose goal is to understand, manage, retain, and grow the companies’ relationships with high-quality drivers.

The CTF’s goals are to review industry data and better understand capacity trends, develop more in-house driver relationship training, services and benefits for Interstate Dedicated company drivers. It will also assess marketing options that increase brand awareness, and communicate the initiatives with all employees.

The task force comprises employees from both companies and is headed up by Interstate Transport’s COO, Mike Friedly. The group is exploring numerous ideas and has divided the research work into smaller teams of two or three people within each company.

For example, one of the teams analyzed data in order to get a clearer picture of industry-wide capacity fluctuations and Interstate’s capacity utilization trends. The team created monthly ‘snapshots’ that included the number of new and repeat service providers used by Interstate Transport on particular lanes each month, lanes that provided exceptionally difficult capacity challenges, and industry-wide driver turnover rates.

Employees of Interstate Dedicated Inc., the asset-based division of Interstate Logistics Group, participate in the meetings by helping to validate material and concepts from the driver’s perspective.

So far, the task force implemented a driver recognition and incentive program for Interstate Dedicated’s company drivers. The rewards program allows the drivers to earn points they can use to purchase items from a large gift catalogue. Interstate Dedicated also offers tickets to sporting events to its drivers with the highest safety performance in particular periods. These types of successful acknowledgement programs have led to one of the lowest driver turnover rates in the industry, which continues to be a key, ongoing goal at Interstate Dedicated.
