American Trucking Associations has urged the Department of Transportation to start conducting a rulemaking to mandate electronic logging devices.

The rulemaking on ELDs is one of the provisions of the recently passed MAP-21 surface transportation bill.

ATA, a letter sent to DOT on Wednesday, asked the agency to recognize that a mandate on ELDs is among the most important of the provisions in the bill.

“In ATA’s view, ELDs are the best option to improve hours of service compliance and, if the underlying HOS rules are based on sound research, ELDs are a very good tool by which additional truck safety gains can be achieved, ATA President Bill Graves wrote to Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.
